Colombo’s Next Big Transformation: Beira Lake Set for a Historic Makeover
The Government has taken steps to accelerate the proposed “Temple City” project, which aims to transform the area surrounding Beira Lake and the historic Gangaramaya Temple into an international tourism and cultural hub.
The project was discussed at a meeting chaired by Presidential Secretary Nandika Sanath Kumanayake at the Presidential Secretariat on Tuesday (30).
The Urban Development Authority (UDA), under the guidance of the Hunupitiya Gangaramaya Temple, has proposed the project to enhance the area’s tourism potential and develop it into a major cultural and visitor destination.
Planned developments include the construction of a pedestrian walkway around Beira Lake, landscaping, and the expansion of tourism-friendly facilities to improve accessibility for both local and foreign visitors.
